For most people their roots are important. Your background, history and culture largely determines how you feel and with whom you identify. For lesbian, gay and bisexual people, this identification process is often more difficult: you don't grow up with "gay or lesbian" roots and many schools will not teach you anything about them.

Homosexual feelings and behaviour were always there, but the definitions and the freedom to express it differed a lot. These insights will help you to explain this historical and cultural context to teenagers, whether lesbian, gay, bisexual or heterosexual.
